Yoga Etiquette

Please Be Punctual
Arrive 10 minutes before your class starts - please avoid being late: it is disruptive to the teacher and other students.

Please Remove Footwear Before Entering The Yoga Space
Since yoga is practiced barefoot, it is most hygienic if everyone takes off their shoes first thing.

Please Turn Off Your Cell Phone
One of the intentions for many yoga students is to cultivate a quiet space. In order to take off your day and to respect the needs of fellow students, powering down your phones and pagers is an important way to honour the yoga practice. Make a habit out of this even before you enter the yoga space (please don't set it to vibrate).

Wear Appropriate Clothing
Dress comfortably and modestly in non-restrictive clothes that allow for freedom of movement. For greatest comfort, layering is recommended.

Embrace the Silence
Yoga is a time of inviting stillness and presence, so please respect others by refraining from carrying on conversations during class. Even whispering can be highly distracting to fellow students and to your teacher. Similarly, please speak quietly in the front desk area when a class is in session.

Metta is Scent Sensitive
Please avoid wearing scented products (perfume, aftershave) to class to honour the needs of fellow students.

Stay for Savasana
Savasana or the final relaxation is an important part of your yoga practice. Incorporate the time in savasana into your schedule - try not to make a habit of leaving class early. If you must leave the class early, please do so before final relaxation, not in the middle.

Eating and Drinking
Students are encouraged to bring water with them to class however, please do not bring food into the yoga room. Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. For your comfort, avoid taking large meals directly before class opting for fruit and plenty of water instead. Please hydrate well before and after class to best enjoy the detoxification benefits of your yoga practice.

Personal Edges
At Metta Massage & Yoga Clinic we respect the choices you make on the mat in the yoga room and we encourage you to approach postures with the wisdom contained in your own body. We adhere to a concept of non-competition in our classes and encourage students to work at their own pace. We trust that you are cultivating body-awareness and will listen to your body's messages regarding the difference between sensation and pain and believe that you will moderate your efforts in class appropriately to keep yourself safe. Our teachers will not encourage you to go beyond what is physically appropriate for you and will encourage you to rest, modify postures and use props as appropriate.
