Myofascia is the connective tissue that supports or bundles together individual muscle fibres (other body tissues also have fascia). This tissue can become restricted due to disease, overuse, trauma, infections or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension and restricted circulation.
Irritation of fascia or muscle causes local inflammation, which if it becomes chronic begins to thicken the connective tissue, causing pain and irritation. This causes a reflexive muscle tension that causes more inflammation and begins an ongoing cycle of pain.
Myofascial release is a therapeutic technique that consists of a mixture of stretching and massage work. This technique can be used to align fascia and remove adhesions throughout the body restoring range of motion and reducing or eliminating pain.
